As more devices come online, we’ll be collecting more data than even the most skilled data scientists can fully interpret. That’s why people are reaching out to Artificial Intelligence; to help them crunch that data at an unprecedented rate.

For all of its power, AI will never be able to make the same kind of insightful connections as a Data Scientist, unless, it actually understands the meaning behind the data it’s crunching.

For example, any AI could show a correlation between rainfall and tree growth, but what it couldn’t tell you is that trees need water to grow, and rain is water. As well as if our current weather patterns continue, they could have a massive effect on the logging industry in the Pacific Northwest.

Connected thinking requires more than algorithms. It requires actual common sense and a rich understanding of the world in which we live. So that’s exactly what we have created, an Artificial Intelligence that uses common sense to understand the world, and interpret data, with true human knowledge.

Computers traditionally are good at things where humans are weak, and vice versa. Cyc-based applications bridge the divide for the first time. People and computers working together can act more intelligently than any person or group of humans can act alone.

Cyc goes far beyond other AI systems that rely only on massively parallel algorithms, pattern matching and statistical methodologies to create the illusion of intelligence. Cyc acquires knowledge, insight, and understanding the same way humans do, through evidence, experience, and reasoning. In human terms, Cyc represents the “left brain” deep knowledge-based functions that are lacking in the shallow “right brain” approaches of pattern matching, probability-based AI systems.

It took more than 30 years to build such an intricate reasoning platform.

Just as it takes more than two decades of real-world life experiences and schooling for a human to acquire knowledge, understanding, competence, and mastery. Cyc has been learning, building, testing, and proving its knowledge bases for more than three decades. It is now ready to apply its unique strengths to solving the most complicated problems in the business world.

What does common sense look like? This visualization of our knowledge base reveals the core structural connections between more than half a million concepts in the Cyc knowledge base. These relationships represent just a small fraction of the tens of thousands in use that enable integration with external sources of data.
